How difficult is getting jobs immediately after graduation for international students in Canada?

The answer varies according to your province, field of education, past working experience in a relative field, and your university campus. There is no debate about Canada being home to some prestigious universities. It is the land of opportunities for millions of immigrants. A stable economy, set standard of living, and well-paid jobs can cost you some struggles and challenges as well.

Canada is a welcoming country and enrolls thousands of international students each year. A recent survey by the Canadian Bureau of International Education i.e. CBIE reports approximately 60% of international students wish to stay back in Canada after their graduation. You might guess that competition is high, which is true. But do not get scared because there are multiple opportunities available in Canada.

Getting any job in Canada is not very difficult as compared to other countries like the USA, Germany, and the UK. However, a Post-Graduate program will make your job much easier. You need to have a post-graduation work permit to work in Canada after graduation. This will allow international students to stay back and in the country for up to 3 years.

Your job role and salary will depend on the choice of sector and company. Also, the region in which you choose to work will have different tax rates. This will affect your salary package as well as your standard of living. Most MBA Students and MS graduates especially in the IT sector or Computer Sciences land up with good salary packages.

Work Permit for Finding Jobs in Canada

After you complete your degrees, Canadian Study Permit is valid for up to only 90 days. This period should be utilized by international students to hunt for jobs and preferably with high salary packages if they wish to stay back in the country. In addition, Canada’s Immigration department gives 180 days for international students to apply for this permit after the release of the final marks. Therefore international students can also apply for a visitor record to extend their stay in case they need more time to find a job.

However, to get Post-Study Work Permit in Canada you must meet these requirements:

Enrolled in a minimum of 8 month-long full-time program

Completed study at a designated learning institute

Validity of passport for the entire duration (Duration of Post-Study Work Permit)

Take COVID 19 Effect into Consideration

In the early stage of this global pandemic, Canada had an unemployment rate of only 5.5% back in 2020. Unfortunately, it rose to 14% after the first wave of COVID 19 (April 2020). But a good factor is that it dropped 4% in July 2020. Unlike the USA, Canada is granting PGWP despite the global pandemic.

One plus point is that the Canadian education system gives you a practical approach and degrees from Canadian Universities are accepted by employers all over the globe.

So you can work anywhere after graduation even if you wish to work outside Canada.

The Canadian government helps a lot of international students by providing them opportunities to work in Canada.

Sectors to get High Packages

If you do not hold a PG program degree and want to find a job only based on a graduation degree, then certain sectors would offer you great packages after your graduation. The fields related to Construction, Computer and Technology, Automobiles, and Medicine. It is important to note that COVID 19 has ended up creating more jobs in the healthcare sector. It is not only in Canada but across the globe. The demand for healthcare professionals from physiotherapists to nutritionists, from nurses to MRI specialists, has suddenly taken a hike.

However, students need to remember that the chances of getting a good job in Canada after graduation mainly depend upon their personality, abilities, qualities, experience, communication skills, academic score, and language proficiency. No matter how tough the competition gets, a student with good communication skills always grabs the chance.

International students should also consider the change in economies and policies post-pandemic. The policies however can change or transform according to the political situation of the country. It is always advisable to take strong action and decisions on the basis of the policies that currently exist and apply. Students always need to keep themselves updated with the proposed changes in Visa laws or PR policy changes.

It is a fact that gaining work experience in Canada after graduation can make you wait for a little long time if you wish to permanently immigrate to the country.

Helping Hands

In case you want to stay back and facilitate this process, you can consider these two programs: Post-Graduate Work Program and Provincial Nominee Program. As mentioned earlier in this article, graduation in only specific sectors such as Automobile and Construction can provide comforting salary packages after graduation.

If you do not belong to a specific field that will assure you a high-paid job then you might need to think of a Post Graduate Work Program. The second best option to get for international students would be the Provincial Nominee Program. However, this option is more suitable in case you want permanent residency.

This program allows international students to be nominated by the province in order to become permanent residents of Canada. Also, to qualify, you must possess the skills, correct education, and past work experience.

Takeaway

Finding a job after graduation is not a daunting task in Canada as compared to other developed countries. The economy of Canada is expanding day by day. It is certainly a positive indicator and the country will welcome more immigrants in the upcoming years. If students focus on their communication skills, and expertise in the respective field then multiple opportunities will arrive in a row.

Bonus:-

See, As you read above in the article, getting jobs immediately in Canada after graduation mostly depends upon the course or field you are in. Sectors like IT, computer engineering, or computer science and medicine, which have very high scope in present and future, can be land into immediate job getting a bucket. With high-paying jobs. Wwwooo...!!

Fields like civil, mechanical, electrical, fitness, sports programs, business management, project management, logistics, supply chain, etc., will take some while to get a job after graduation. Now it also depends on some of the factors.

Factors like:-

Efforts

Your efforts matter which you are putting into getting the jobs. Some of the students become so lazy about changing their part-time jobs. They tend to become more attached and comfy in their existing jobs, usually not core jobs. If you want to work in your field, you should not wait for anything to change for you. You have to consistently look for the new opportunities coming to you and have that much potential to grab that opportunity.

After buying a car, some students start ride services, and then they forget about their studies and other more important things, just for the sake of earning more money. I have personally met a lot of such students who made this mistake and landed into critical situations while looking for jobs because of their lack of knowledge and not enough marks to even qualify for interviews.

Resume

A resume impacts a lot while applying for jobs. You must know what your targeted company is looking for in their new employee. You can get to know that by attentively looking at their job description. According to that, you can make customized resumes for a specific company. This method increases your percentage of getting hired at an early stage.

The format of the resume also matters a lot. I will discuss the practical format of resumes for Canadian companies in some other articles. Let me know if you want that article.

References

Now, references play a very significant role in getting jobs in Canada. It's like an inevitable factor that will never be downgraded in Canada. Canadian companies are more inclined to hire those who have any references in their company. It's kind of uncommon in Canada to get a job without reference. Even in part-time jobs, you need references.

That strictly doesn't mean that if you don't have any references, then you won't get any jobs. You will get a job. It's just that if you have a reference, your chances of getting jobs at an early stage will be elevated. That is why try to make as connections as you can during your studies and in your daily life. You don't know which man of god could be your life maker in Canada.
